English language teaching lies at the very centre of NIS’ Superior English Programme. It is of the utmost importance that we provide all our students with a strong foundation in English which they can then apply to all their other subjects within our programme. We pride ourselves on developing our students to become truly trilingual in being able to not only read, write, speak and listen in English but also – crucially – to think in English as well. Within our English course we have a number of programmes that help develop specific areas of our students’ English abilities. Reading Programme Each student works their way through our fully structured and systematic reading programme. We use the Ladybird Keywords series which is tried and tested, having been in use for 3 decades. Cambridge University ESOL Each year students in Primary Grades 2, 3, 4 and 6 sit examinations set by Cambridge University external examiners. Our students do very well in these examinations, with most scoring 80 % and above. Weekly Spelling Tests Every week the students are given 20 words to learn for spelling tests. These words come from their regular English courses, thus reinforcing vocabulary and developing spelling skills. Listening Comprehension Tests During each term students take listening tests based on the Cambridge University English for Speakers of Other Languages Listening examinations. Phonics Schemes Our teachers have received specialist phonics training and apply these skills to the teaching of phonics, spelling and reading. Grammar Workshops Once a week all students have a special grammar lesson to assist their learning and support them in becoming familiar with the complexities of English grammar. Story Writing Every weekend our students are given a written assignment. This develops their writing skills, their descriptive skills and their imaginations. Class Presentations We encourage our students to become confident when speaking in front of their peers and we therefore invite them to give presentations to their classmates. The most outstanding students are selected to take part in competitions with other schools. Last term one of our students came in first place in a Thai MoE English speaking competition. Child-Centered ESL Activities All our teachers aim to make learning fun and productive. They receive regular training and adopt modern teaching techniques oriented towards and focused on learners. IT AND COMPUTER AT NIS As the world technology is changing rapidly, we always try to catch up with the new technologies together with new IT equipments. We all know that IT is one of the most important infrastructure for the business and organization to the diffrent society. Our furture generation must have the knowledge of IT in order to give the best human resource. We teach our students not only how to use and apply computer and software but also Internet and its resources. We provide fully equipmented class room with Internet for students to learn, practice, test and research. MATHEMATICS AT NIS The Maths Department at Nantawan Trilingual School is focused on helping students to develop their skills in Mathematics and problem solving. Mathematics fills the world that we live in and our goal is to help students to see how valuable and important Maths is in their world. We teach the essential foundational principles of Maths and how they apply to the real world. Maths is a necessary subject everyone needs to function in the world successfully. We want our students to be able to apply mathematical principles in a critical, thinking matter. We have just added to NIS’ curriculum a series of outstanding textbooks that will significantly elevate the students’ ability to learn Mathematics. These books link subject matter together from one grade to the next, building the students’ skills in essential topics. Maths is more then just adding and subtracting. It is thinking, problem solving and learning how to take mathematical principles and concepts and use them every day in the practical world our students inhabit. SCIENCE TEACHING AT NIS The School believes that a successful future for our students depends on the scientific and technological skills they gain during their education. NIS therefore creates opportunities for students such as hands-on activities applying scientific methods of inquiry, field trips, research projects and similar facilities. The latter will help and encourage the students as they observe, inquire, interpret, formulate and create. NIS Science curriculum is based on age-appropriate knowledge and understanding of life, the Earth, the physical sciences and studying the history and nature of science. |
