 OUR CURRICULUM

Nantawan International School [NIS] is a Cambridge International Centre fully accredited by Cambridge International Examinations [CIE]. Cambridge International Centreship is only awarded by CIE to schools around the world able to demonstrate high professional standards in their academic delivery and resources CIE. CIE is linked to the University of Cambridge in England, which has been a hallmark of academic excellence for over 800 years. For more information on CIE, please see <http://www.cie.org.uk/>.

It is this commitment to academic excellence and CIE’s continued research into education and curriculum development that prompted NIS to apply to become a Cambridge International Centre. The result of this relationship is the School’s proud provision of a tried and tested curricular framework which has been shown fully to prepare students for further university study regardless of which country they come from as long as they meet the required standards.

The curriculum at NIS is eclectic, and includes elements from UK, Australian, Singaporean, USA and Thai syllabuses organised within the framework provided by CIE. This flexibility means that our teachers and administration are able to source cutting-edge texts, programmes and syllabuses from all over the world and incorporate them into their daily teaching.

This framework is known in the Primary School (Years 1-6) as the Cambridge International Primary Programme [CIPP] and is recognised worldwide as a superior framework within which to deliver a truly international primary school education. As students graduate and enter Secondary School, the CIE framework they follow is the Cambridge Checkpoint Programme [CCP]. Like the CIPP, the CCP equips students with the requisite skills and knowledge to be able to enter further education; in this case, at a university or college of their choice anywhere in the world.

Appreciating the need for a thorough grounding in the host country’s mores, NIS still retains some aspects of a Thai curriculum in its continued delivery of Thai language and Thai culture classes. These lessons typically take up 10% of the teaching week, with Chinese accounting for a further 10%. For the remainder of the time (i.e. 80% of the school week), all lessons (in Mathematics, Science, ICT, Art, Music, PE, Health Studies and Social Science) are delivered in the English language.

We currently teach from Pre-Kindergarten through to Secondary Year 8 using a child-centric approach that ensures our students develop intellectually, emotionally, socially and physically. The School is fortunate to enjoy extensive resources, and our well qualified, teachers use high quality materials and resources in their day-to-day classroom teaching.

Whilst our students come from many different countries, they are all required to speak English whilst at school (the obvious exceptions being when they are studying Thai and/or Chinese). This school-wide English Speaking Environment [ESE] policy encourages and builds confidence and fluency in the English language. This ESE is promoted right across the years from pre-kindergarten through to the senior Secondary years and - coupled with NIS’ balanced curriculum - provides our students with a truly authentic international educational experience.

Our Primary and Secondary School students in Years 1 – 6 typically have 8 core lessons per day; extra classes are also available.
