Nantawan International School is a Cambridge International Centre under the jurisdiction of the Royal Thai Ministry of Education. Our curriculum is eclectic and includes elements from UK, Australian and Thai syllabuses organised within the framework provided by the University of Cambridge International Examinations. The Cambridge International Primary Programme [CIPP] is outcomes based scope and sequence which articulates the skills, attributes and knowledge that children should have at the various stages of their education.

It acknowledges the work done by psychologists and educators in child development and is based on the notion that all children are individuals that have preferred learning styles, individual potential and are progressing along an individual continuum.

The CIPP allows teachers to value-add through their own curriculum knowledge whether gained in the UK, the USA, Australia or elsewhere. The CIPP ensures a rigorous syllabus with both depth and breadth and has both internal and external quality assurance through inspections, examinations and professional development.

The CIPP framework covers Mathematics, English, Health, Physical Education, Society & Environment, Technology & Enterprise, Science, ICT and the Arts. In addition, all students study a special programme of Chinese and Thai. Our Chinese Language Department is staffed by experienced, native speakers who teach both traditional and simplified Chinese and our Thai department teaches both Thai language as well as Thai Social Studies.

We currently teach from Pre-Kindergarten through to Secondary Grade 8. We use a child-centred approach that ensures our students develop intellectually, emotionally, socially and physically. The school has extensive resources and our well-qualified, teachers use high quality materials in their classroom teaching.

Our students come from different countries and are required to speak English in and around the school, but they also develop communication skills in Thai and Chinese to prepare them to join the global society of the future.

NIS’ SUPERIOR ENGLISH PROGRAMME – A GREAT FOUNDATION FOR INTERNATIONAL SECONDARY STUDIES!

Nantawan International School offers a Superior English Programme supplemented by Thai and Chinese classes. It is licensed by the Royal Thai Ministry of Education and holds Cambridge International Centreship. Its trilingual orientation offers an excellent preparation for higher education and life after studies.

Primary Level students at Prathom 1-6 have 9 lessons per day in English, Maths, Science, Thai, Chinese, Computing, Art, Music, PE and other subjects. Secondary Level students from Mathayom 1 upwards follow a similar timetable but with Chinese and Thai as options only.

What makes NIS’ E-Programme superior? The answer is fourfold:

Firstly NIS students speak English all day. This is unusual and very beneficial: NIS has been consistently commended by Thai MoE E-programme inspectors for its exclusive use of English throughout all E-programme lessons. This helps NIS students think as well as speaking and writing in English.

Secondly all NIS Superior E-programme students take Cambridge Examination Board (UK) ESOL tests as part of their studies. Each year NIS is proud to announce the names of those of its students who receive Cambridge ESOL certificates following their studies on its Superior E-programme.

Thirdly NIS’ Superior E-programme supplements its syllabuses with various international ingredients (e.g. its Science and Mathematics syllabuses are both derived from the USA). This enhances students’ exposure to international education as a complement to their Thai MoE-approved syllabus.

Fourthly NIS is an approved Cambridge International Centre fully authorised to deliver courses within the excellent academic framework provided by Cambridge International Examinations (the international examining board linked to the 800-year old University of Cambridge in the UK).

NIS’ Superior English Programme thus has a number of special features other schools’ E-programmes lack. Together these special features make NIS’ Superior E-programme unique and superior to others.

  3. Certification: our students are eligible to take the following Chinese language qualifications:
    • The Petchra Yod Moongkut Chinese Language Competition registered with the Royal Ministry of Education, Thailand.
    • Primary students of a high standard may enter for the Chinese Language Proficiency Test known as HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi).
    • The Chinese Ministry of Education has established a China National Committee for the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK), abbreviated to CNCCPT. This CNCCPT oversees the administration of the HSK and issues Chinese Language proficiency certificates in its name. The CNCCPT administers the HSK in conjunction with the HSK Center of Beijing Language and Culture University.
    • Attaining an HSK certificate:
      • (i) signifies that its holder has acquired the requisite level of Chinese proficiency to enter a college or university as an undergraduate or graduate student;
      • (ii) exempts its holder from taking various Chinese language courses (depending on the level of certification);
      • (iii) provides employers with a basis to evaluate the the Chinese language proficiency of job applicants.
    • The HSK is held regularly in Mainland China and at designated test sites abroad.
      • Primary students of a low standard are advised to take the Youth Chinese Test (YCT).
    • YCT preparation courses are held for non-Chinese speakers (under the age of 15) and are divided into 3 levels:

      • Level 2: This level is suitable for youngsters who can use familiar words to answer simple questions in areas of immediate need or basic daily topics. Students can read Pinyin and recognise the basic strokes of Chinese characters.
      • Goals: Master a vocabulary of c. 600 words; understand short passages on the subjects of school study, and conduct basic communications in topics and functions such as feelings, attitudes, suggestions, sports and descriptions of people and objects.
      • Level 3: This level is suitable for youngsters who can complete basic communication tasks on familiar topics in predictable everyday situations.

  4. We also cater for students unable to keep up with Chinese studies in our regular courses. We offer such students our Chinese Assistance Programme (CAP). This expedites students’ learning as quickly as possible to ensure they reach the standard of our regular Chinese courses.
  5. We ensure our Chinese lessons are conducted in a happy atmosphere to make learning Chinese enjoyable as well as academically rewarding.
  6. Our Chinese teachers are fully qualified, experienced native speakers.
