Behaviour Policy – Nantawan International School 2010

Statement of Policy

Our belief at Nantawan International School (NIS) is that children learn from positive reinforcement of good behaviour. We will provide a safe and nurturing environment and reward all students who contribute to this philosophy.

For children who express negative behaviour we will work with them on correcting their position and reward them for a change in attitude.

We firmly believe that the school should replicate the family atmosphere and aim to show that good behaviour should be expressed in school as it is at home. With open, fluid communication with parents and carers we aim to offer a seamless progression from home to school.

Positive Behaviour Reinforcement

To assist our behaviour policy we have developed a ‘pink card system.’ Every child from Kindergarten to High school has the opportunity to earn points. There is a scale of 1-3 points. A point may be awarded by a teacher for good work or helpful behaviour. Three points may be awarded for major progress or achievement. These points are placed, by the student, into a box by the Head Teacher’s (English) office. All points count towards the house points system. The Head of House will keep a score of points and this will add to the Terms final total.

Rewards are based on effort and are relative to a student’s ability. There will be a teacher’s certificate and a Head teacher’s award at the end of each term for the student who achieves the most points and for the student who is considered to have contributed to the well-being of other students and the school.

To foster pastoral care we run a house system from Pre-kindergarten to high school levels. Each child entering the school is placed into one of four of our houses. (Named after the Earths key elements.) Students with brothers or sisters in the school are automatically placed in the same house. Throughout the year there are house competitions and challenges. Our house boards keep students informed of upcoming events.

We believe by watching their elders and peers and through their guidance we can reinforce good behaviour within the school. We also ask older students to help and guide their younger team members.

Detection and  Correction of Negative Behaviour

At Nantawan, we feel it is important to correct negative behaviour as soon as it occurs. To this end we have a 4 stage policy.

Stage 1:

A student is warned about unacceptable behaviour by the teacher. A student may be given a corrective behaviour task (CBT) to allow them to correct their behaviour. This may be writing an assignment, helping around the school or undertaking a task that will benefit them. Any CBT will involve the child learning and should not be considered a punishment. A grey slip will be passed to the Head Teacher.

Stage 2:

The student is required to attend a meeting with the Thai Principal, or the Head Teacher. A communication will be established with the student’s parents / carers depending on the severity of the problem. (From a note in the communication book, to a phone conversation.)

Stage 3:

A meeting arranged between the student’s parents / carers and the school. A plan is devised to correct any problematic behaviour. A review date to assess behaviour  is set at the meeting. If a student has corrected their behaviour then no further action will be taken. If the behaviour persists then progression to stage 4 will follow.

Stage 4:

Should the school consider that a student’s behaviour is unchangeable, with the resources and structure we have at NIS, then a meeting with the school management, parents association representative and the parents of the student (plus representatives) will be held. The outcome will be determined by the offending behaviour; ranging from a further plan being formulated up to exclusion (temporary or permanently) from the school.

Please note any behaviour which is considered abusive in any way, to staff or students at NIS will never be tolerated. Any such action by a student, parent or staff member, will lead to the removal of the offender, to safeguard other parties involved. At any time a student may be moved to stage 2, 3 or 4 depending on the severity of the behaviour in concern.
