A H1N1 Information
Dear Parents and Carers, The decision to send your child to school or to keep him or her at home is yours; we respect your right to make this decision. What we do ask is that we all work together and if you decide to send your child to school please reinforce the same health concepts we are teaching the children here at school. The best way to deal with the H1N1 threat is to follow these simple yet effective guidelines provided by the World Health Organization. WHO Recommendation 1. That students, teachers, and other staff who feel unwell should stay home. NIS Response. We recommend to everyone, staff and students, to stay home if they are feeling unwell and to see their doctor as soon as is possible. WHO Recommendation 2. Plans should be in place, and space made available, to isolate students and staff who become ill while at school. NIS Response. We have a sick room and a School Nurse to isolate and monitor students and staff. Children who display symptoms will be confined in the sick room until their parents come to pick them up. WHO Recommendation 3. Schools should promote hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette and be stocked with appropriate supplies. Proper cleaning and ventilation and measures to reduce crowding are also advised. NIS Response. We have been using Sterilizing Hand Gels since the first outbreak of H1N1 in Thailand and have stepped this up to also include Hand Gel in all of the classrooms and to have teachers explain the need for good personal hygiene. Further steps. We would ask that you please inform the office should you decide to keep your child at home. This way we can make sure the absence is recorded as an ‘Authorised Absence’ rather than an ‘Unexplained Absence’. We thank you for assisting us in this administrative task and look forward to seeing you at the upcoming Christmas Concert. Nantawan International School uses state-of-the-art health diagnostic equipment to measure each student’s temperature upon their arrival. What are the signs and symptoms of infection? Signs of influenza A H1N1 are flu-like, including a fever, coughing, headaches, muscle and joint pains, a sore throat and a runny nose and sometimes vomiting and diarrhoea. We at Nantawan realise just how quickly rumours can spread or people can panic. We are using the latest information obtained from reliable international sources and recommend you also use reliable sources such as WHO to get up-to-the-minute information.
